On September 27, 2019, as CEO of the Winchester Rescue Mission, I embarked on a cross country motorcycle ride with fellow riders to bring awareness of the homeless crisis in America; specifically focusing on the role mental illness plays in this crisis. The 2019 Rescue Ride has led to an annual ride. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 presents a unique opportunity for Missions to speak on not only the challenges faced during the pandemic but more importantly the current concerns and issues. Personally, for the Winchester Rescue Mission, we are seeing a demand for shelter, nutritional support, mental health services and outreach that has never been experienced.
Rescue Ride 2022 will depart from the Winchester Rescue Mission on September 25, 2022 and travel across the country ending in Seattle, Washington on October 8, 2022. This trip provides an opportunity to talk with individuals experiencing homelessness, staff and volunteers working to address the crisis, community leaders and members and law enforcement personnel, and utilize this knowledge to help advance our mission to end homelessness in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. The Rescue Ride provides an amazing opportunity to not only understand the homeless crisis our country is facing, but see the innovative and successful programs that are transforming lives.

The mental health crisis paired with the rapid and drastic changes facing the homeless community make this year’s Rescue Ride more important than ever. The rapidly changing dynamics have made this a time sensitive but significantly important opportunity to shine a light on these issues. A developing partnership with People TV and desire to capture new footage of the devastating effects of COVID19 has allowed us to put this trip together quickly and effectively.
